Sinus Surgery in Annapolis & Severna Park

Individuals who suffer from chronic sinusitis, or those that have structural deficiencies of the sinuses, are often able to relieve their problematic symptoms with sinus surgery.

Typically, treatment for such symptoms will begin with various over-the-counter and prescription medications, but if these methods do not properly relieve the symptoms within an appropriate time frame, then there may be cause for a surgical procedure to provide relief.

What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis, also known as rhinosinusitis, is a condition that is caused by a viral or bacterial infection within the sinuses. This infection leads to inflammation of the lining of the sinuses, which blocks the sinuses. Once blocked, the sinuses begin to fill with mucus, which can cause a variety of symptoms such as:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Pain or pressure around the head and neck, which has been known to lead to headaches
  • Cloudy or colored drainage from the nose

Acute sinusitis will occur when the aforementioned symptoms have existed for a period of 4 weeks or more.

Ideal Candidates for Sinus Surgery

Before undergoing surgery, your ENT doctor is likely to try several less invasive treatment methods like irrigations, topical sprays, or oral pills. Sinus surgery should only be considered when other treatment options have been exhausted, and the nasal blockage experienced by the patient is affecting their daily life.

Results of a Sinus Surgery

Various forms of sinus surgery are all used to create a similar outcome. The basic objective of each sinus surgery is to restore natural sinus drainage, as this will soothe the sinus lining and relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

It is important to carefully consider each of your surgical options, and to voice any questions or concerns regarding sinus surgery to your ENT specialist.
